About Jennifer Raby

Jennifer Raby Jenn's formal art schooling began in grade three when enrolled in a private school which combined a fine arts program ( Art Studio and Art History) with academic studies starting from grade 3 thru 13. When Jenn completed her grade eight her parents treated her in the summer with a week at Kingsmere painting plain air with her mother in a class taught by Henri Masson her favorite teacher at the time.
At school Jenn was taught about the expression of art through time and her art period favorites are the Caveman, the Egyptians, the Impressionists, and then 20th century.
Jenn's Mom being an artist provided her with a fabulous role model and creative environments. Jenn was exposed throughout her life not only to her mother's creative ways but to those of her mother's artistic friends and students. They had a profound influence on Jenn's art journey giving her an early awareness of their struggles as they experimented to discover the pros and cons of multiple medias (oils, water colour, charcoal, mono printing, oil pastels, sculpture, pottery, batik, acrylics and multimedia) to find the best way to express their own visual voice. Jenn was often welcomed in their studios and on field trips.
In 1969 when her mom delved into batik she joined her.. Ah Ha! Her Eureka! Within two years she yearned to share the joy and magic of this media with others and began to offer classes to adults in the evenings thru the Ottawa City Programs. Batik leads Jenn back into watercolour with a new perspective and understanding. Armed with these two symbiotic Medias Jenn revisited how she would create the learning experience for others and started offering Structured Drawing Skills, Watercolour and Batik courses in her home in Ottawa. When she retired 12 years ago she brought these offerings with her onto Perth, Carleton Place and Cornwall and continued to evolve them. She has donated her time to YAK youth services and to the senior residents of Carolina Court. Jenn is currently an active member of the Rideau Lakes Art Association, a honorary member of Focus Art in Cornwall and the President and co-founder of the Batik Artists Association of Canada B.A.A.C.
